Aspen Ski Resort Carbon Neutral

posted by Rex Manz on 23 September 2008

Aspen Skiing Co. officials have a publicly-stated objective of offsetting their greenhouse gas emissions and becoming carbon-neutral by 2020.  It is a plan that they have had for some time and annually measure their progress.  With this year’s review completed, CEO Mike Kaplan said, “In our case, our carbon footprint is only creeping downward, and that’s entirely because our utility provider is using more renewable power over time.”  An honest admission, that little progress is being made through any direct efforts by Aspen Skiing Co.  Rather than relying on the public utility company, Aspen Skiing has decided to pursue alternative energy sources themselves.  Of primary consideration is construction of a wind farm to locally produce electricity that could satisfy 75% of current electrical demand.  Another initiative is entering into a long-term 20-year commitment to purchase electricity from an existing wind farm in Nebraska.  A third initiative is the construction of additional micro-hydroelectric projects as currently operate at Snowmass.  These ideas may each happen as they are not mutually exclusive.  Producing too much alternative energy is not a problem.  Good intentions realized will make a difference.  It will take responsible companies to turn the tide against the consumption of non-renewable resources.
