Eagle County Regional Airport

posted by Rex Manz on 26 September 2008

The Eagle County Regional Airport, serving the Vail and Beaver Creek ski resorts, began a project to lengthen its sole-runway by 1,000 feet in 2006.  It was scheduled for completion this summer, but high fuel and concrete costs have delayed the project until probably next summer.  The project was undertaken to allow fully-loaded commercial aircraft to take-off in various weather conditions.  Due to the high-elevation of the airport, large commercial airplanes like the Boeing 757, on occasion, would need to leave passengers, cargo and/or fuel behind in order to take-off.  With the completion of the extension of the runway, it is anticipated that several airlines will add direct non-stop flights from the east coast.  Accessing Vail and Beaver Creek, especially for east coast travelers will be greatly enhanced with the completion of the project.
