Aspen’s State Of The Union
Well-meaning elected officials and City of Aspen staff have voiced their intentions to meet the housing, child care and other needs of its middle-class workforce. A recently released report covering numerous statistics for the years 2000-2008 show that the gap is widening rather than narrowing. While the City of Aspen issued 10,000 real estate building permits during this period valued at more than $2.4-billion, only about 1,000 were for affordable housing units. Two-thousand permits were for “scrape and replace” housing units which are considered the opposite-end of the affordable real estate spectrum. Only 25% of Aspen’s workforce lives in Aspen while the city’s goal is to house 60% of its workers. One-third of the children in Aspen’s child care facilities are those of the commuting workforce. The City of Aspen is planning a series of community meetings and other planning efforts to address the report’s findings and determine a course to chart for Aspen’s future. Action begins with intention.
