Boulder’s Pops and Scrapes

posted by Rex Manz on 24 October 2008

Elected Boulder officials have wrestled with what to do about the number of single-family houses that have been redeveloped either through adding a second-story (pop) or demolition (scrape).  The proponents on either side of this argument are equally-vocal.  The building permits for pops and scrapes have been declining.  It would be easy to attribute the decline to the economy, but the number of total residential building permits has been steady not declining.  Looking at demographic trends, it seems that the significant number of new downtown Boulder luxury condos developed over the past few years have provided an alternative for the “pop or scrape” people looking for luxury accommodations.  Interesting theory.
