Telluride - Colorado’s Alps

posted by Rex Manz on 30 October 2008

For sheer stunning beauty, Telluride is unsurpassed. Frequently compared to the Alps, Telluride’s mountain majesty is breathtaking. Photos can not do justice compared with the actual panorama.

The Town of Telluride has an amazing and bawdy history. Saloons and brothels were the city’s mainstay in the hard rock mining days of the late 1800’s. This is where Butch Cassidy began his bank robbing career in 1889. In 1891 Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse constructed the world’s first alternative current power plant in Telluride and the rest is world history.

The merchants of this wild mining town banded together and began weaving the civic fabric of the community.  The current San Miguel County Courthouse was rebuilt in 1887 after a fire.  Law and order slowly tamed Telluride.

As the mining industry collapsed, Telluride became yet one more largely abandoned mountain mining town.  Ranching and agriculture became the economic engine.  The 1960’s saw the transformation of many of Colorado’s mining towns into artist communities and a refuge for “hippies”.  By the 1970’s, the fledgling ski industry was beginning to take root in Colorado including Telluride.

Mountain Village was created by the Telluride Ski Resort.  Mountain Village is connected to the Town of Telluride by a free gondola that operates year-around except for scheduled maintenance.  The existence of the connecting gondola is important in unifying the charm of Telluride with the ski mountain.  The Town and the Ski Resort are very cooperative and nurture a synergistic relationship.  Very smart.

The Town of Telluride is both sophisticated and laid-back.  The locals love their ski town and appreciate the many guests that visit and support the local economy.  When you stop for your morning coffee, you will be among the locals waiting in line.  By the way, the best in Telluride always will have a line of locals in front of it.

Telluride was among the first ski towns to begin a summer festival season.  Festivals celebrate film, blue grass music, beer, chamber music, technology, wine, food — even mushrooms!  I personally enjoy Telluride’s summer as much as I do Telluride’s ski season.

The San Miguel River runs through Telluride.  Whether in the summer, fall or winter, walking along the river path is meditative.  I never tire of the beauty and tranquility of the river walk.
