Aspen - The Beauty Of It All

posted by Rex Manz on 03 November 2008

“I’m flying out of New York on a business trip to London, shopping in Paris, dining in Rome and returning to Aspen for a ski retreat.”  Aspen doesn’t seem out-of-place in this travel itinerary.  It is true that the “rich and famous” do attract other rich and famous people.  Still, before there were any rich and famous people in Aspen, why were people attracted to Aspen in the first place?

They came because of silver — not in the jeweler’s case, but in the ground.  The vintage 1880’s buildings lining Aspen’s streets reflect the prosperity of the city’s then 12,000 residents, second in population only to Denver.  As the mining boom busted, the few remaining hardy mountain folk turned to agriculture and ranching.  It wasn’t until the discovery of “white gold” that the Aspen economy found traction again.

World War II ski paratroopers were trained through-out the Colorado Rocky Mountains.  Many returned to Colorado after the war.  Aspen Mountain was opened in 1947 by a group of these former elite soldiers.

Over the years, the Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk ski areas were developed as an expansion of the Aspen ski area.  With three distinct mountains, the skiing in Aspen is notable.  ESPN has hosted its premere Winter X Games in Aspen for several years and will continue to do so through the Winter X Games 14 scheduled for 2010.  The panache of Aspen extends beyond its shopping and restaurants.

In 1949, the Goethe Bicentennial Convocation was organized in Aspen in celebration of the German philosopher’s birthday anniversary.  The gathering attracted nationally regarded “thinkers”, artists and musicians.  Aside from its natural beauty, the elegance and intellect of Aspen was beginning to revel itself.

As Aspen’s appeal grew, so did the level of products and services that you found among the local mechants and hospitality vendors.  Today, you will find boutiques with shoppes in Paris, Beverly Hills, Milan and Aspen.  As you stroll the streets of Aspen, it is likely that you will spot the rich and the famous.

Despite the celebrity glamour of Aspen, what has not changed over the years is Aspen’s rugged natural beauty.
