Vail - King Of The Hill
Unlike many of Colorado’s ski towns, Vail did not begin as an 1880’s brawling mining town. Charlie Vail, a Colorado state highway engineer, oversaw the construction of Hwy 6 over the Continental Divide in 1940. The highway was named Vail Pass in his honor. When World War ll ski paratrooper Pete Seibert and local rancher Earl Eaton went about creating a recreational ski area, they named their mountain and their resort “Vail” when it opened in 1962.
By 1969, Vail was the most popular ski resort in Colorado. With 5,289 skiable acres, it is the largest ski area in North America. Vail is synonymous with Colorado skiing. It is home to the Colorado Ski Museum and has hosted many prestigious ski events over its four-decades of history. Skiing the “back bowls” of Vail is well known around-the-world, as is the nightlife found in Vail Village.
The Town of Vail is an interesting blend of autonomy and syncronisity with Vail Associates, the corporate owner of the Vail Ski Resort. All aspects of Vail Village were designed in support of the skier’s experience. Vail Village is distinctly European in styling with brick-paved pedestrian-only venues and plazas. Art galleies and boutique stores are peppered through-out Vail Village.
You enter Vail Village through an enchanting wooden covered bridge spanning a mountain stream. Summer or winter, the experience is equally charming. This is how skiers travel on foot to the base lift as well as those simply out for an afternoon of cafe-trotting. International visitors can be heard in Vail both in the summer and winter.
Aside from the skiing, people are attracted to Vail’s natural scenic beauty. Whether sitting on a balcony or standing on a bridge over a mountain stream, the powerful hand of nature is evident. Vail is a resort for all-seasons!
