Breckenridge - Take A Break In Breck
Welcome to Breckenridge — established 1859. Gold established Breckenridge in 1859 when it was discovered along the Blue River running through Breckenridge. The Gold Pan Saloon was also established in 1859. The gold boom busted, but the Gold Pan Saloon is still in business as the longest continuously operating bar west of the Mississippi. If they had an espresso cafe back then, no doubt it would still be in operation.
Mountain streams were the barometer to finding gold — sometimes in the water, sometimes in the ground. Breckenridge has an abundance of mountain river water. Beginning in 1898, Breckenridge was home to “dredge mining”. Enormous two-story floating dredges weighing 500-tons ravaged Breckenridge’s rivers excavating the river bottom to a depth of 45-feet leaving piles of debris on either side of the river - an environmental disaster. A replica of a mining dredge has been constructed on a pond in Downtown Breckenridge and houses a restaurant.
Surprisingly, it was a Wichita Kansas lumber company that opened the Breckenridge Ski area. Today, the Breckenridge Ski Resort is owned and managed by Vail Associates. Breckenridge is at an elevation of 9,600-feet with a summit elevation of almost 13,000-feet. Snow is plentiful and with over 2,000 skiable acres, Breck has a faithful following of skiers.
The appeal of Breck extends beyond simple skiing. Breckenridge is a mountain community with heart and soul. Real people live in Breckenridge, raising their families and displaying civic pride in their city parks and facilities. Festival tents frequently go up in the summer months in the Downtown Park. It seems that many summer weekends are as crowded as ski weekends.
There are over 350 historic structures remaining in Breckenridge, making it the largest historic district in Colorado. You will find both fine and casual dining and abundant shopping opportunities in Downtown Breckenridge.
