Steamboat Springs - Home Of Champagne Powder

posted by Rex Manz on 19 November 2008

The Yampatika Utes summered in the Yampa Valley for generations.  French trappers arrived in the early 1880s.  Routt County is home to over 150 natural springs, not all hot.  Legend has it that a French trapper was reminded of a steamboat when he heard one of the area springs “chugging”.

Steamboat was first homesteaded in 1875.  Ranching and mining were the predominant industries in the early days.  Ranching continues today along with the business of “white gold”.  In the early 1900’s, Carl Howelsen was employed by the Ringling Brothers Circus and was famous for his ski jumping act known as the “Flying Norseman”.  In 1914, Carl founded and opened the Howelsen Hill ski area just outside of Steamboat Springs.  In 1963, the Steamboat Ski Resort was formed and opened.

Since the 1960’s, the Town of Steamboat Springs has developed beyond its famous Strawberry Park Hot Springs and specially-named Heart Spring.  Downtown Steamboat boosts over 40 restaurants and bars, as well as over 90 shops and galleries.  The summer days and weekends are filled with festivals, events and outdoor activities.  It seems that the summers have become almost as busy as the ski season.

Still, Steamboat is most famous for its “champagne powder” snow skiing, cross country skiing and snowboarding.  It is no wonder that Steamboat is home to over 50 Olympians.  As the locals like to say, “Don’t miss the Boat!”.
