Winter Park - A Lesson In History

The railroad has been a significant part of Winter Park’s history as well as the present-day.  The Moffat Railroad Tunnel was completed in 1927 under the Continental Divide.  In the early 1930’s, the Colorado Arlberg Club cleared the first man-made ski trail in Colorado in the present-day Winter Park area.  The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad utilized the Moffat Tunnel in transporting visitors to the Winter Park area.

The Winter Park ski area was named and established in the 1940’s by the City and County of Denver as a mountain park.  In visiting Winter Park, you will discover that the railroad still passes almost directly through the Winter Park Ski Resort.  The “Ski Train” operates today between Denver and Winter Park offering a great way to avoid skier-traffic on Interstate 70 while enjoying a piece of history.

Recently, IntraWest has contraced the management of the ski resort.  IntraWest has greatly expanded the ski resort amenities as well as the housing options with many newly constructed ski in / ski out condos for sale.

Summer activities have vastly expanded with the addition of a summer family fun park at the ski resort, together with an alpine slide down one of the ski slopes.  Mountain biking, hiking and camping remain additional summer options as well.

Reportedly, the first ski trail created in the 1930’s was named after the mining-era madam Mary Jane.  The Mary Jane Trail remains a marquee ski run today at the Winter Park Ski Resort.  The Winter Park Ski Resort is among Colorado’s favorites.
