Crested Butte - Historic Community

Placer miners panned for gold in the many streams of Gunnison County beginning in the 1880’s.  Silver mining boomed giving rise to numerous mining camps.  Crested Butte was established in 1880 and developed into the state’s largest coal producing region as well.  While the gold, silver and coal mining industries have come and gone, the sense of community has never left Crested Butte.

Crested Butte features an expansive city park and Center for the Arts for its residents and visitors.  A National Historic District, downtown Crested Butte is lined with original late-1880’s general store buildings, saloons, boarding houses and Victorian homes.  Brightly painted in gaudy colors of the era, Crested Butte gives you a feeling of warmth and festivity.

After mining failed, ranching sustained the area economy through the 1950’s.  Mt. Crested Butte was established in 1961 a short distance away and the Crested Butte Mountain Ski Resort soon followed.  Convenient shuttle buses connect Crested Butte with the ski resort as well as self-park lots in Mt. Crested Butte for ski guests with their own transportation.

The scenery is spectacular as well as the winter snow conditions.  The combination of old historic mining town together with a nearby ski resort makes Crested Butte a great summer and winter destination.
