Copper Mountain - Summit County’s Largest Resort

posted by Rex Manz on 26 December 2008

The Copper Mountain Ski Resort is easily identified as you approach it on Interstate-70.  It was Judge Wheeler in the mid-1880’s that first named the mining settlement at the junction of the Ten Mile and Gore mountain ranges.  He simply called it Wheeler Junction.  Remains of these early mining camps can still be found in the Copper Mountain ski area.

Chuck Lewis purchased 280-acres of land in 1971 near the current base of the present-day ski resort.  He then gained Forest Service approval to develop a ski area.  Over the years, the ski area has been expanded to its current size of almost 2,500 acres.  Copper Mountain Ski Resort is the largest ski area in Colorado’s Summit County.

In 1997, the resort was purchased by Intrawest and the existing facilities have undergone significant expansion making Copper Mountain more of a destination ski resort.  The feeling is that of an Swiss Alpine village.

Summer facilities, events and activities has been added by Intrawest.  Additional condos for sale have been constructed for both ski and summer use.  There is a golf course that has been constructed as well for summer visitors.
