Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center

posted by Rex Manz on 05 January 2009

Adaptive skiing refers to finding a way to adapt skiing to serve people of all abilities and disabilities.  The mission of the Breckenridge Outdor Education Center (BOEC) began in the early 1970’s as a few Breckeridge residents began leading cross country ski trips for people with disabilities.  BOEC was established in 1977 for the express purpose of creating outdoor programs for the disabled.

Volunteers and financial contributions have been the mainstay over the past 30-years and have allowed for continual expansion of programs.  In addition to cross country and downhill skiing programs, BOEC has developed rock climbing, dog sledding, hand-cycling and canoeing progams for the disabled.  Equally impressive, BOEC physically created a nature trail with campsites for the disabled.

BOEC has been at the national forefront of developing outdoor adaptive programs and equipment.  BOEC believes that “attitudes are the real disabilities”.  Adventure and challenge are the lifeblood of BOEC.  For more info visit http://www.boec.org/
