Colorado Chautauqua - Boulder

posted by Rex Manz on 08 January 2009

In 1874 the Chautauqua Institution was formed in Upstate New York as a summer camp to educate Sunday school teachers.  The emphasis was that of teaching not revivalist.  Chautauqua has never affilitated with any one religious denomination, but many religions are present on Chautauqua grounds today in the form of chapels and other facilities.

The scope of educational offerings expanded quickly to include literature, science, the arts, and public affairs.  Concerts and social activities were offered a venue by the Chautauquas.  By 1915, the Chautauqua Movement had grown to over 12,000 communities through out the United States.  The variety of offerings ranged from scientific lectures to Shakespeare theatre to vaudeville to circus acts.

By the mid-1930’s, the Chautuaqu Movement had substantially declined — the victim of a growing car culture, radio, movies and growth in evangelical Christianity.

The Colorado Chautuaqua in Boulder opened in July 1898 with a gathering of over 4,000 people.  Chautauqua Park in Boulder flourished and remains one of only three original Chautauquas still in existence today.  The Auditorium (1898), Dining Hall (1900) and Community House (1918) remain in operation today.  Intended originally for summer use only, these structures have been winterized and renovated for extended seasonal use.

The original tradition of many Chautauquas was to provide lodging for visiting families to partake in the events and activities for an extended period.  This was true for the Boulder Chautauqua.  Continuing today during the summer months, Boulder Chautauqua offers 60-cottages, Missions House Lodge and Columbine Lodge for nightly or extended-stay rentals.
