Vail Going Green

posted by Rex Manz on 17 January 2009

A community-wide process named Vail 20/20 identified the environment as among the citizens’ top priorities.  The Town of Vail has begun to respond in designing a program to reduce solid waste by 20% in 10-years and create a green building code in the spirit of the national Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

Vail will begin tracking emissions and utility bills to gauge the town’s progress.  Even event organizers will be asked to lend a hand by making their events more sustainable by eliminating solid waste such as disposable water bottles.  Citizens will pay-as-you-throw in the disposal of solid waste.

Vail is encouraging the use of alternative transportation rather than use of individual cars.  There are many aspects to the overall plan.  Vail is demonstrating an environmental stewardship that is refreshing.
