Air flight has been a part of Stapleton’s history beginning in 1918 when Ira Boyd Humphreys opened the first Denver commercial airport nearby.  In the 1920s, the Denver Municipal Airport was next opened nearby and renamed Stapleton Airfield in 1944 in honor of Denver mayor Benjamin Stapleton.  As the City of Denver grew to surround Stapleton International Airport, city fathers planned and developed Denver International Airport as a regional airport well beyond the eastern edge of Denver and its suburbs.  In 1995 on a single day, air traffic was re-routed from Stapleton to DIA.  The redevelopment of the 4,700-acre Stapleton neighborhood began in 2001 with a planned build-out by 2020.  The Stapleton neighborhood has been master-planned as a sustainable eco-friendly communtity offering a suburban lifestyle away from Downtown.  Public open-space and parks are laced-together with paths and trails for pedestrians and bicylces.  As business have established themselves in the area, it has become easier to work and live in Stapleton.
