Dr. John Evans MD was appointed Colorado’s second territorial governor in 1861 by President Abraham Lincoln.  Prior to moving to Colorado, Dr. Evans founded Northwestern University in “Evans”ton Illinois.  He founded the Colorado Seminary in Downtown Denver in 1864 eventually renaming and relocating the university years later to an 80-acre parcel of land donated.  Present day University of Denver (DU) is located on this land since expanded to 125-acres.  With over 10,000 students, DU is the oldest private college in the Rocky Mountain region.  The University neighborhood is defined by DU.  If you enjoy the academic overtones of a university town, you will love the University DU neighborhood!
