Washington Park’s Smith Lake began as a watering hole for buffalo.  As Denver grew, the area that is Wash Park today was incorporated as South Denver.  Afte South Denver was annexed by Denver, the park was designed and constructed from 1899 through 1908.  The completion of the park attracted families looking to work in the city, but live away from the congestion, crime, and filth of the city.  The area grew significantly between 1900 and 1940 with many of the brick houses built during this era existing today.  The 162-acre Washington Park remains the dominant feature of the neighborhood and its centerpiece.  Two-lakes, jogging path, bike path, playing fields, and lake activities attract large scores of residents and non-neighborhood visitors daily.  The neighborhood’s second main attraction is “old town” South Gaylord Street with its Victorian-style street lamps and hometown shops, restuarants, coffee houses, cafes, and summer street festivals.  The light rail is close-by for a quick commute downtown for work or city entertainment.  Wash Park is a great place to live!
