Five Points Curtis Park Denver Condos Lofts For Sale
In 1868, real estate developers Ebert and Case donated a park to the city to entice people to buy their land and build homes. They named it after Samuel Curtis, an early settler.
Downtown Denver streets follow a diagonal grid while the rest of the city’s streets follow a mostly traditional directional grid. Unusual intersections result when the Downtown streets meet-up with the other neighborhoods. In 1881, the Stout Street Herdic Coach Line published is route map identifying its neighborhood stop as “Five Points” as a description of the number of intersecting streets. The label stuck. While the city refers to the neighborhood as Five Points, it is also known as Curtis Park.
Five Point’s history is rich and storied. It has always been a melting-pot of economic and cultural diversity. Initially a wealthy family neighborhood, by the 1920s, Five Points was mostly a working class blue collar neighborhood. Between 1870 and 1893, Denver’s population grew from 5,000 to over 100,000 with the Five Points neighborhood growing tremendously given its concentration of “workers” and affordable multi-unit housing.
In the 1930s through the 1950s, Five Points boasted over 50 jass clubs attracting jazz legends such as Billie Holiday, Miles Davis and Duke Ellington. Today, Denver’s Juneteenth Music Festival attracts over 100,000 people. Five Points is also home to the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library and the Black Americanwest Museum and Heritage Center.
Five Points remains a funky melting pot of diversity and originality!
