Highland Bridge

Highland Bridge

Highland and Lower Highland, known as LoHi, were part of the original Town of Highlands founded in 1875.  Located west of the South Platte River and now Interstate-25, the Town of Highlands was situated on an elevated ridge looking down on the City of Denver.  This is exactly what Denver’s wealthy families wanted — to look down on the “filthy and sinful” city.  They didn’t mind making their money by day in the city, but they didn’t want to sleep there!  As the Town of Highlands grew, the City of Denver attempted to annex it several times, but the residents voted “no”.

With the increasing population in the Town of Highlands, transportation to the city over the South Platte River and the railroad yard became increasingly congested.  Over time, the wealthy left the Town of Highlands for the new Capitol Hill neighborhood east of Downtown.  In 1896, the Town of Highlands was annexed by the City of Denver and became known as the Highland neighborhood.

During the 1890s and continuing into the early 1900s, waves of European immigrants settled in the Highland neighborhood, notably the Italians. Even today, Highland is known for its ethnic restaurants. Modestly-priced houses on narrow lots were constructed for the immigrants adjacent to the former mansions of the wealthy.

Old World Charm

Old World Charm

Following World War II, Highland suffered from the all-to-common “urban flight” of the 1960s.  The area declined until it was rediscovered by artists looking for inexpensive housing and business space.  Today, Highland has an old-world charm with family-run businesses, many historic buildings, and a pedestrian-friendly shopping district.

A series of three-bridges were constructed spanning the railroad yard, the South Platte River and Interstate-25 making it possible for pedestrians to travel conveniently between Denver’s Urban Villages of Highland to Riverfront Park, to LoDo, and continuing to Downtown.  This access created another real estate development boom resulting in new condominum construction as well as the conversion of old storehouses and factories into residential lofts and small business space.

Highland and particularily Lower Highland LoHi are very popular with the young urban city dweller.  Come see for yourself!
