LoDo Lower Downtown

LoDo Lower Downtown

Cottonwood trees were cut down by General William Larimer in 1858 to build some log cabins in the middle of his one-square-mile land claim.  He established Denver City in the approximate location of Larimer Square in present day LoDo.  While most sought gold, Larimer wanted to sell the prospectors land for gold.

To establish a city of commerce, you needed a railroad, but the transcontinental railroad went to Cheyenne Wyoming rather than Denver.  In 1870, the people of Denver sold bonds to fund a 106-mile rail spur from Cheyene to Denver.  Union Station, in present day LoDo, was opened in 1881 when the Denver & Rio Grande Western, the Denver South Park & Pacific, the Colorado Central, and the Union Pacific railroads all served Denver.
The area surrounding the Union Station railyards became home to numerous warehouses, factories and businesses.  As highways and airports displaced train service, the area began to decline.  During the 1960’s and 1970’s, 20-percent of the buildings in LoDo were demolished.

In 1988, the Denver City Council established the Lower Downtown Historic District regulating building heights, demolition and encouraging building rehabilitation and renovation.  The District covers 27-blocks and has preserved over 120-buildings.
