The Colorado National Guard Field, opened in 1923, was renamed Lowry Field after Denver’s World War I hero Francis Lowry.  The City of Denver purchased land in the area in 1932 and encouraged the U.S. Army Air Corps to open an airfield.  In 1937, equipment and hangars were relocated from the National Guard airfield to the new Lowry Army Air Base.

As the City of Denver grew, the flight operations of the Lowry airfield were moved to Buckley Air Base in 1966 and operations at Lowry airfield ceased completely in 1994.  Almost immediately, planning started for a new Lowry community beyond the dated housing that surrounded the airfield.

The new master-planned community of Lowry includes over 800-acres of public open space and parks.  Public art is displayed through-out the community which is known for its numerous flower beds.  Lowry’s Town Center was designed as a gathering place complete with a shopping district, restuarants, and entertainment options.

Lowry’s John Hand Theater, the Lowry Swim Club, and Big Bear Ice Arena are local favorities.
