The Curtiss-Humphreys Airplane Company was formed in 1919 nearby Stapleton. In 1929, the Denver Municipal Airport was opened and renamed Stapleton Airfield honoring Denver’s mayor Benjamin Stapleton in 1944.
As Denver grew, the air traffic demands grew proportionately. City planners knew that the capacity of Stapleton International Airport would be exceed and began planning its replacement. In 1995, Stapleton transferred all air traffic to the new Denver International Airport in a single-day.
With the closure of Stapleton Airport, the redevelopment of a new 4,700-acre community began in 2001. The vision was for a sustainable community in-tune with the environment enhanced with ample public open space and parks with a community center. Stapleton was born!
