East and contiguous to Denver’s Central Business District you will find the North Capitol Hill neighborhood.  In the 1880’s, this area was known as ”East Denver” since it was the eastern-most area of the city.  When the Colorado state capitol area was developed was just south of the neighborhood, it was identified as North Capitol Hill on the city planner’s map.  Among locals, it become known as Uptown perhaps signifying the upscale nature that the residential neighborhood was developed with tree-lined boulevards and houses set-back from the streets.

Around the turn-of-the-century, Denver was promoted as offering relief for those suffering from respiratory ailments.  The clean dry fresh mountain air was the calling card for health.  Private hospitals and sanitariums were developed on the edge of town in “East Denver”.  Today, the Uptown neighborhood is home to a hospital complex that includes Presbyterian / St. Luke’s Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente, and Exempla Saint Joseph’s Hospital.  Combined with the support businesses, healthcare employment in the area exceeds 10,000 people.

Like most central city neighborhoods, the area has experienced its share of neglect over the decades.  Given the area’s strong employment base, tree-lined historic residential neighborhoods, and proximity to Downtown, the Uptown neighborhood has experienced significant restoration and redevelopment.  The refurbished Ogden Theater and Fillmore Auditorium are live entertainment venues nearby.  “Restaurant Row” on 17th Street offers a concentration of fine and eclectic eateries.
