Washington Park Denver Condos Lofts For Sale
Shortly after Denver was founded in 1858, development began around a buffalo watering tank in the Washington Park area. That watering tank would become today’s Smith Lake. In 1886, Denver’s first suburb was incorporated as South Denver and included the Washington Park neighborhood.
After the 1893 Silver Crash, South Denver was annexed to Denver due to the failing economy. Reinhard Schuetze, Denver’s landscape architect, oversaw the design and construction of Washington Park beginning in 1899 through 1908, including Smith Lake, Grasmere Lake, and the park’s “carriage ways”. The development of Washington Park attracted many Denver city dwellers and families looking for a more rural setting.
Many brick homes were built in the Washington Park neighborhood between 1900 and 1940, all within walking distance of the park. Washington Park encompasses 162-acres and is the largest convential park in Denver, second only to City Park which houses the zoo and museums. It is the crown jewel of the neighborhood and includes a 2.8-mile jogging trail, paved bike path, picnic areas, a boat house with paddle boats for rent, two-lakes with fishing and sailing, volleyball, ballplaying fields, and large expanses of grass with old-trees for just relaxing.
Old-town Washington Park is centered on South Gaylord Street. Cafes, coffee houses, restaurants, an ice cream parlour, boutique shoppes, an apothecary, and more, can all be found here. Residents and visitors enjoy the summer street festivals of music, food, and entertainment. Washington Park feels like you are living in the country!
